SyNergy Lab Week 2026: Experiencing Research First-Hand

What does everyday life in a research lab look like? How do scientists investigate Alzheimer's disease? And what does it take to turn an idea into a research project? From October 5 to 9, 2026, eight medical students from LMU Munich had the opportunity to experience neuroscience research first-hand during the SyNergy Lab Week.

Organized by Prof. Jonas Neher and Dr. Anne Wöllmer as part of the SyNergy Translational Teaching Track, the Lab Week offered a varied program in the Neher/Haass lab. Students gained hands-on experience with histological and biochemical techniques, developed their own research questions, designed experiments, and presented their project ideas as scientific posters at the end of the week.

Participants particularly appreciated the enthusiastic support from the lab team, the opportunity to explore a wide range of research methods, and the chance to interact directly with scientists. "It was the most exciting week of my studies at LMU," one student wrote afterwards, thanking the entire team for their time, dedication, and effort.

The evaluation results were equally encouraging: All students who completed the survey gave the Lab Week the highest possible grade (1, on the German grading scale) and said they would recommend it to others. All also reported that the experience had increased their interest in research.

The SyNergy Lab Week was a great example of how hands-on experience and direct interaction with researchers can spark enthusiasm for science – and perhaps even inspire the next generation of physician-scientists.
