Press Release: Immune cells attack synapses
Inflammation causes cerebral cortex dysfunction in multiple sclerosis. Damage to the brain gray matter plays an important role in the progression of multiple sclerosis. A team of neuroscientists including SyNergy members Thomas Misgeld, Martin Kerschensteiner, and Ruben Portugues has now shown that the cause are inflammatory responses that lead to synapse loss, reducing neuronal activity. Targeted inhibition of these immune cells could mitigate such synaptic damage, and therefore provides a promising therapeutic option for progressive multiple sclerosis. more

Press Release: Quick look under the skin
Self-learning algorithms analyze medical imaging data. Imaging techniques enable a detailed look inside an organism. But interpreting the data is time-consuming and requires a great deal of experience. Artificial neural networks open up new possibilities, as shown in a new publication with SyNergy member Ali Ertürk. They require just seconds to interpret whole-body scans of mice and to segment and depict the organs in colors, instead of in various shades of gray. This facilitates the analysis considerably. more
